DoinGood This Weekend

Happy Friday everyone! Here’s your Friday Five – 5 ways you can DoGood in Atlanta this weekend!

*The Braves are out of the hunt for post-season play…but they’re helping collect donations for Atlanta flood relief through Sunday. Starting two-and-a-half hours before first pitch through the second inning, they’re asking for donations of:

  • Money
  • Gift cards
  • Hygiene items
  • School supplies
  • Non perishable foods
  • Baby items

Going to the North Georgia Fair up in Marietta this weekend? What a co-inkydink – MUST Ministries will be there this weekend too! Bring your finest cans of green beans, tuna, SpaghettiO’s or whatever great non-perishables you have and donate to their food drive. They’re also looking for volunteers to help out: Contact Annette Lee at 678-218-4481. Did I mention you might be able to get your funnel cake on for f-r-e-e if you help out?

Saturday is Hands On Atlanta Day! I’ve participated twice in the past and it was a very rewarding experience…although there was that time I wandered the square in Decatur for over an hour looking for the place I signed up to volunteer. I never did find it; what a bummer. Anyway, this year looks like they may be playing this hand a little differently: Fee-based registration to get in on this year’s event. $25 for adults, $10 for the kiddos. The list of volunteer ops is wide open, everything from helping out 7Stages to Project Open Hand.

Break out those running (or walking, whatever moves you) shoes and hit the road! MADD is holding their annual Walk Like MADD 5k at Zoo Atlanta on Saturday morning. Set your alarm, ceremony begins at 8am. It’s early but it’s for a good cause. 🙂

Feeling all awesome and Earth-lovin this weekend? Check out Hotoberfest – 100% of proceeds benefiting causes such as Trees Atlanta (ahh, great memories of volunteering there. need to go back soon), Dialogue, and Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. This is a freebie, unless you want to hang out in the Beer Garten to keep you occupied – that’ll run you $30-$55. OR, on the volunteer side of things, SafeRide is looking to fill about 100 volunteer driver positions for this festival. Please email and in the comments section add ‘Hotoberfest’ or call Trey at 770-256-1096 (volunteer info via

I’d never heard of Ahimsa House before I stumbled across them this evening, but I like their style. It’s an organization dedicated to protecting animals from domestic violence….and they’re all over the place this weekend. Email if you can help out at the Howl O’ Weenie on Saturday at Cabbagetown Park or at Dogtoberfest in Decatur on Sunday.
