Haiti Needs You, Atlanta

Ok, Haiti isn’t exactly my hood…but I meet Haitians here in Atlanta all the time (including a guy who’s very near-and-dear to my heart). Yesterday, a humongous earthquake hit the island and the damage is devastating. Have you seen the pictures? My heart hurts so badly for them right now, especially given that the island is so densely populated and poor. I’ll be keeping an eye and ear out for Atlanta-based fundraising efforts to aid victims of the earthquake in Haiti. In the meanwhile, I’ll link you to NPR’s big list of organizations you can donate to in order to help:

11am edit- I’m starting to find some Atlanta-based organizations that are helping out Haiti…

CARE is deploying a group ASAP to Port-Au-Prince to help and accepting monetary donations to help further their relief efforts.

ATL4HAITI will be collecting goods/supplies. They’ve got a few organizations that will take the shipments and make sure they go toward the relief efforts, starting in about two weeks. Drop-off locations:

• WRFG Radio -Mon – Fri; 11:00AM – 6:00PM; Sat (1/16) – 2PM-4PM; 1083 Austin Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30307-1940
• Northside Women’s Specialists -Mon – Fri; 8:30AM – 5:00PM; 980 Johnson Ferry Rd, Suite 620,Atlanta, GA 30342-1608
• Northside Women’s Specialists – Mon – Fri; 8:00AM – 3:30PM; 1015 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076-1507
• Club Intrigue – Mon-Sun; 4PM – until; 5471 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA 30083

The website for Atlanta-based The Haitian Alliance, which is one of the partner agencies for the above, is also accepting online donations.

Hosea Feed The Hungry has a close relationship with Christian Revival Center based in Savannah, whose pastor is on the ground there in Haiti. For more info: 404-755-8878. Donations can be sent directly to 2020 Bull St. Savannah 31401 OR donate online to HFTH – the proceeds will be send directly to Haiti via the Center in Savannah.

I’ve also heard through the grapevine that Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club is collecting donations for Pure Water of the World: Haiti.

MedShare, based in Decatur, is accepting both monetary donations from anyone and in-kind donations from the medical community of pediatric and adult medical items from this list.

Students at Forest Park Middle School in ClayCo are collecting donations of bottled water: 930 Finley Drive in Forest Park or call 404-362-3510

Café Faseka in DeKalb County is collecting food, medicine and clothing. 447 North Indian Creek Drive, 770-362-4198

Leverage Food Lounge on Cascade will donate 10 cents on every dollar to the American Red Cross. – today through Friday, Jan 15

D&K Men’s Warehouse locations in Morrow, Atlanta, Decatur, and Duluth are collecting donations of items such as water, food, vitamins, and ointments (donations going to Hosea Feed the Hungry) starting Saturday 1/16

National Black Arts Fest is holding a fundraiser, Love:Haiti at Churchill Grounds Sunday 1/17 at 7:30. Minimum $15 donation – proceeds to UNICEF.

Family Outreach Ministries is collecting goods donations (vitamins, bandages, non-perishable food, toiletries) at 14th Street Storage – 151 14th Street in Atlanta – 9am-6pm

Both Kroger and Publix stores across metro Atlanta are accepting donations at the register. Proceeds go to Red Cross
